Based on resolver’s experience to date you can only claim on your travel insurance if you cancel your flight. Otherwise you are claiming from the airline for the flight cancellation. Be aware that compensation for cancelled flights depends on what alternatives and assistance you were offered at the time, so take note of any help given and even take a photo of the departure board showing your cancelled flight. The first port of call if your flight is cancelled or delayed is your airline. They have to offer alternative flights or refunds if you can’t fly. You may also be entitled to compensation if your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before you were due to fly. This applies to all those departing from European Union airports as well as those arriving at an EU airport on an EU airline. If the flight is delayed or cancelled because of bad weather, this is where travel insurance should step in. Most policies will compensate you for losing out on your hotel and car hire. Check your policy carefully as some insurers will even pay a lump sum to cover these costs if you abandon your trip altogether, though you need to check to find out the minimum length of time you must be delayed before you can claim. resolver recommends that you submit your query to your insurer in writing and resolver can assist you in submitting, recording and reminding you when and who to escalate to.

You should know
  • If you’re making a complaint about making an insurance claim rather than a mis-sold policy, check your documents to see who the “underwriter” is. You’ll need to make a complaint to that organisation.

If you cannot resolve your issue you cannot raise your case to the Ombudsman until 8 weeks after you have first raised your complaint with your supplier, or you have received a ‘letter of deadlock’ from the company stating that they cannot resolve the issue as you have asked. Your complaint must also not be older than 6 months. For an accurate decision by the Ombudsman you should provide a detailed file of your communications and supporting documentation. In addition make sure you explain what you want as an outcome as this will help assess your case.
