Based on resolver’s experience to date, if you become sick between making a booking and the date of travel, your policy may provide compensation for financial loss if you are unable to travel. Cover varies from policy to policy but insurers exclude many circumstances. A cancelled trip is typically compensated if you become ill or have an accident or are quarantined because of sickness. Policies usually include a list of the situations when the policyholder can claim, but it is usually quite limited. For instance, you are unlikely to be covered if you were sick when booking the trip or the claim is related to an existing medical condition that was not disclosed when taking out the insurance. In the case of illness, you will need a medical certificate stating that you were ‘unfit to travel’ in order to make a claim. You should obtain this from your GP at the time of the illness. Refer to your insurance document for details. If you have any queries or complaints regarding your claim, resolver recommends that you submit your concern in writing to the customer services department of your insurance provider. resolver can assist you in submitting, recording and reminding you when and who to escalate to.

You should know
  • If you’re making a complaint about making an insurance claim rather than a mis-sold policy, check your documents to see who the “underwriter” is. You’ll need to make a complaint to that organisation.

If you cannot resolve your issue you cannot raise your case to the Ombudsman until 8 weeks after you have first raised your complaint with your supplier, or you have received a ‘letter of deadlock’ from the company stating that they cannot resolve the issue as you have asked. Your complaint must also not be older than 6 months. For an accurate decision by the Ombudsman you should provide a detailed file of your communications and supporting documentation. In addition make sure you explain what you want as an outcome as this will help assess your case.
