Pet insurance - Pet ill (age related)

Based on resolver’s experience to date, having your pet fall ill – whatever its age – can be an upsetting and stressful time. You should check the small print on your policy document very carefully before making a claim, as, whilst most companies will insure your pet for life, there are some companies who won’t. So, even if your cat or dog is already insured, once it hits the company’s cut-off age, insurance may cease or cover may be restricted. You should check what happens to your policy, as your pet gets older; some companies may raise the premiums as your pet ages or sometimes they increase the excess on the policy. Be aware that many insurers won’t insure your pet for the first time if it is past a certain age, depending on the breed. If you feel that your insurance policy should cover the treatment which your pet is receiving at the age at which it is receiving it (based on a reading of the policy) but your insurer is refusing to allow you to claim on your policy for that illness you should write to your insurer's customer services department setting out the problem which you have encountered and asking that they assure you that your pet will be covered for the treatment which you are giving it.

You should know

• If you’re making a complaint about making an insurance claim rather than a mis-sold policy, check your documents to see who the “underwriter” is. You’ll need to make a complaint to that organisation.

If you cannot resolve your issue you cannot raise your case to the Ombudsman until 8 weeks after you have first raised your complaint with your insurer, or you have received a ‘letter of deadlock’ from the company stating that they cannot resolve the issue as you have asked. Your complaint must also not be older than 6 months. For an accurate decision by the Ombudsman you should provide a detailed file of your communications and supporting documentation.
